CONGREGATIONAL PLANNING - 2008

JOINT VISION

OUR MISSION:

BOLDLY SHARING THE LOVE OF CHRIST is the mission and ministry of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.  We accept Jesus’ Great Commission to go and make disciples of all people (Matthew 28:18-20).  As a family of believers, we are committed to the work of Christ:

BRINGING the “Good News” of the Gospel to all people

SUPPORTING and instructing Christian families.

LEADING people to grow in faith through God’s Holy Word and life-giving sacraments.

CARING for all people.

CRITICAL TARGETS & CONGREGATIONAL GOALS

A.                 Critical Target:  OUTREACH – Beautiful Savior will increase intentional outreach to unchurched believers/seekers (Invite).

GOAL:  The unbelievers and unchurched believers in Lee’s Summit and beyond are hearing the Gospel proclaimed and experiencing the love of Christ through members of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.

Beautiful Savior will accomplish this in the next triennium by:

1.                  Continue to study establishing a Christian Preschool that will serve as a mission outpost to young children and young families in our community.

2.                  Improving our Outreach through Upward Basketball by being more intentional and through the creation of a “Fan Appreciation Event”.  Also, consider starting Upward soccer or flag football.

3.                  Better promotion of and increased funding for our MOPS ministry in order that it can become a more effective mission outpost to young moms and their families in our community.

4.                  Make the booth at Oktoberfest an “all church activity.”  Expand our outreach through this community event.

5.                  Reestablish Friendship Sunday.  Make it one worship service in the FLC followed by a congregational potluck.  This will encourage everyone to bring a friend and build friendships between those who attend 8 a.m. worship and those who attend 10:30 a.m. worship.

6.                  Multi-media message:  (1)  Broadcast our worship service on radio, local access cable TV, and/or Internet; (2)  Develop a “Meet BSLC DVD” to give to visitors and to give each church family unit (and then challenge them to view it and then give it to a friend); and (3)  VBS and Fireworks fliers that contain the Gospel Message; and (4) Increase advertising

7.                  Study beginning contemporary worship to reach out to the people of the community.

B.                 Critical Target:  SPIRITUAL GROWTH – Beautiful Savior will increase the level of participation in spiritual growth opportunities at every age level (Equip).

GOAL:  Children, teenagers, and adults at Beautiful Savior are regularly studying God’s Word and are growing in their personal faith relationship with Jesus Christ.

Beautiful Savior will accomplish this in the next triennium by:

1.                  Publicize and communicate.  Quarterly Bible Study fliers, “Opportunities for Spiritual Growth,” to distribute to the congregation (and post online).  These will help us get the word out about new Bible Studies and will help encourage more adults to regularly get into the Word.

2.                  Establishing a Women’s Bible Study group/ministry to meet the spiritual needs of the ladies in our community and congregation.

3.                  Men’s Ministry.  Taking the Men’s Bible Study group to a new level.  Not just Bible study but small groups, activities, and conferences.

4.                  Intentionally get parents engaged to increasing Sunday School and midweek class attendance.

5.                  Progressive series Bible Study to build prerequisite knowledge:  (100, 200, 300 level courses).

6.                  Utilize the Crown Ministry Bible Study program.

7.                  Prayer Ministry, vigils and groups.

8.                  Establish an Adult Education Committee for organizing and training an adult Christian Education program.

C.        Critical Target:  LAY INVOLVEMENT – Beautiful Savior will increase the level of lay involvement in the “doing of ministry” (Send).

GOAL:   Lay people at Beautiful Savior are enthusiastically rolling up their sleeves and working alongside the professional staff in carrying out the ministry of Christ.

Beautiful Savior will accomplish this in the next triennium by:

1.                  Recruiting and training more laypeople for Assimilation Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Upward Basketball Ministry.

2.                  Time and Talent Survey Improvement.  Establish an easy and functional database on the public server that any board or staff member can utilize.

3.                  Begin having “Youth Sundays” (where the Youth help lead worship) on a quarterly basis.

4.                  Continue “Meet Your Church” with continual improvement and focus on a board or auxiliary ministry each month.  Do this with a display in the narthex.  Perhaps put up pictures of everyone on your board with quotes from each person concerning what they like best about serving on that particular board.  Each board or committee would be assigned a month and be asked to do this.

5.                  Time and Talent Drive.  People will fill out commitment forms for time and/or areas of ministry they will serve in for the next year.  EXAMPLE:  I commit to serving 120 hours next year.  I will help with…

6.                  Establish a call group to recruit volunteers to serve and meet ministry needs.

D.                 Critical Target:  HUMAN CARE – Beautiful Savior will improve its care for those hurting in the church and the community.

GOAL:  The members of Beautiful Savior lovingly respond with compassion and care to fellow members and neighbors in the community who are hurting.

Beautiful Savior will accomplish this in the next triennium by:

1.                  Reestablish Stephen Ministry Program

2.                  Establish a “Helping Hands Ministry.”

3.                   “Serve Day” for our community.  Gather together Beautiful Savior (and perhaps other Lutheran Churches) to serve the community by raking leaves, helping at John Knox, etc.  Check into community services here in Lee’s Summit and asking where we can volunteer.

4.                  Continue Food Pantry.  Expand, increase awareness, ensure leadership.

E.                   Critical Target:  FELLOWSHIP – Beautiful Savior will intentionally seek to develop loving and caring relationships among its members.

GOAL:  The members of Beautiful Savior have meaningful, faith enriching relationships with fellow members of the body of Christ.

Beautiful Savior will accomplish this in the next triennium by:

1.                  Intentional BSLC sponsored specific group opportunities.  Change “Pairs and Spares.”  Have specific specialized or affinity groups, to be defined and named later.

2.                  Sports ministries for adults, especially a coed volleyball league at Beautiful Savior.

3.                  Intentional BSLC sponsored Family Social Events.  (Examples include movie night, open gym, family kickball, family dodge ball, barbecue cook off, family softball, concerts, speakers, exercise class[1], scrap booking[2], toddler night, etc).

4.                  Activity Day (a day to help the trustees work on a project, possibly followed up by some sort of food/cookout event).

F.                  Critical Target:  STEWARDSHIP – Beautiful Savior will challenge its members to grow as faithful stewards.

GOAL:  The members of Beautiful Savior joyfully and sacrificially give of their time talents, and resources, trusting God to supply all that they need.

Beautiful Savior will accomplish this in the next triennium by:

1.                  Educating members about the new “one pot approach” to funding our mission and ministry.

2.                  Establishing an effective annual stewardship program/campaign

A.                 Possibly using our own educational DVD to communicate need, opportunity, and joy in being a steward here at Beautiful Savior.

B.                 Possibly with Huddle Meetings

C.                 Possibly with lay led Bible study.

3.                  Establishing “Crown Financial Ministry” small group studies and sponsoring “Crown Financial Ministry” personal finance seminars.

4.                  Increase awareness of stewardship needs by:

A.                 Printing the giving results in the bulletin

B.                 Sending volunteer and budget needs in emails and online.

G.                 Critical Target: ASSIMILATION – Beautiful Savior will intentionally seek to incorporate new members into its active ministry.

GOAL:  New members are building meaningful relationships with other members as they participate in spiritual growth, fellowship, and service activities of Beautiful Savior.

Beautiful Savior will accomplish this in the next triennium by:

1.                  Encouraging members to learn names of new members and introduce themselves to new members through:

A.                 Passing of the peace

B.                 Looking at new member pictures

C.                 Possibly using 3-ring binder directory of all members (updated and current directory in narthex)

2.                  Recruiting someone who will write up a small article to put in the newsletter each month that will share a few things about new members.  It might be called, “Spotlight on New Members.”[3]

3.                  Encourage leaders of the new (or established) specialized or affinity groups and boards to intentionally reach out to New Members (as appropriate) and invite them to activities.  Pastor in charge of assimilation will forward names of new people to the leaders in order that they intentionally invite new members to participate in these ministries.

4.                  Recruit additional members to be involved in our recently developed assimilation ministry, Connector Ministry, which ultimately all about new member orientation.

5.                  Intentionally seek to recruit new members to be greeters and ushers.

6.                  Intentionally include Saturday evening worshipers, possibly through food or social activities.

H.                 Critical Target:  The FUTURE – Beautiful Savior is a church that plans for the future and makes things happen rather than sitting back and asking, “What happened?”

GOAL:  The members of Beautiful Savior are asking intentional questions about it’s physical plant needs, equipment needs, and staffing needs.

Beautiful Savior will accomplish this in the next triennium by seeking answers to these questions:
